Portland-based fashion designer Gretchen Jones (Moth Love) is spearheading a multi-designer fashion show at the Someday Lounge (125 NW 5th) during Portland Fashion Week. The show will feature work by Jones, Emily Katz, Emily Baker of sword + fern, Dust by Julia Blackburn, and Reif by Lindsay Reif. Jones and Katz have each taken a season off, and are roaring back with collections of unique, modern basics. P.S.: go see Emily Katz’ watercolors at sword + fern (811 E Burnside). We’re looking forward to this one.
According to Jones, they’re planning on building out a runway at Someday and that the event will feature both DJs and live bands, but the most interesting bit is that artist Heather Baldwin (who also incidentally, is a killer makeup artist) is doing projections intermixed with (on models?) the runway show. October 10 at Someday Lounge with doors at 9 and show at 10 PM. Fortunately, it’s scheduled in such a way that we can have our cake and eat it too, heading to PFW and then to Someday.

Oregon necklace, Phoebe Owens
Crafty Wonderland today at the Doug Fir Lounge (830 E Burnside) from 11-4 PM. Susan Beal, one of the OG’s of the DIY craft crew in Portland (Holly Stalder remembers her being one of the first to bring her goods in to the old Seaplane on SE Belmont to sell on consignment) will be there with a project from her new book (Go Susan!) Bead Simple at the free DIY table. Bead Simple is full of well-illustrated jewelry projects that will give hope and confidence (and cool jewelry) to the beginner and inspiration to the more experienced jewelry maker. You’ll be able to buy her book at Crafty W.
AND as usual, Crafty will feature something like 40 vendors selling apparel, jewelry, paper goods, art and more with highlights including Jill Bliss, Happycake, and Little Lily. We love Phoebe Owen’s little wooden Oregon pendant.

Tonight Alice Dobson launches the Spring/Summer 09 collection for her line Sofada with a fashion show and benefit for CARES Northwest at the rooftop Jax Bar (826 SW 2nd Avenue). Tickets for the September 12, 6:30 PM show are $20, available at her Sofada boutique (2937 E Burnside).
What to expect? Well, Dobson has for years now done dresses and separates in feminine prints. This year, she collaborated with longtime apprentice, Allison Webber, which Dobson suggests results in a more urban, edgier look.
“This season, we tried something new – mixing 60s and 80s fashion with a contemporary style while staying true to Sofada’s feminine, sexy look,” says Alice Dobson. “You’ll see over-sized puff sleeves on knit dresses and blazers, scalloped necklines and hemlines, more pleating and fuller skirts than usual, cowl necks and even a few couture pieces. We used a lot of bright colors, metallics and polka dots.”
Another Dobson apprentice, Kelcey Blanton, a graduate of the Portland Art Institute and lead sewer at Sofada since 2007, will debut her line, Varnish, what she calls “versatile everyday apparel with simple, clean lines and delicate details.”

Elizabeth Dye introduces her Fall 2008 collection along with one-of-a-kind pieces by jewelry designer, Hazel Cox, with a trunk show and open house at her boutique, The English Dept. (1124 SW Alder) this Friday, September 12 from 3-8 PM. Dye, who can be relied upon for meticulously-made, sophisticated and feminine pieces in fine fabrics has smartly paired with Cox, who is one of few Portland jewelry designer who could go head to head in innovation (particularly with materials) with designers internationally. That Cox has closed her 811 E Burnside studio (that was formerly the boutique Fix she co-owned with Genevieve Dellinger) is a loss…good to know her work can be found at TED. And fall is Dye’s season to shine as her luxe fabrics and updates of period cape and jacket have shown in the past. Don’t miss.

Portland boutiques play nice with each other (no doing the dozens here), and you win. A dozen shops from Portland (with a couple from Hood River thrown in for good measure) are holding one Everest of a sale this Saturday, September 13 from 11-6 PM at what is really the best venue for its size in Portland, the Cleaners at the Ace Hotel (1022 SW Stark). And Bubble Boutique, Le Train Bleu, Moxie, Nolita, Olio United, Parts + Labour, Physical Element, Pin Me Apparel, Phlox, Sameunderneath, Shoefly, Zella’s Shoe. These shops cover all manner and price point of primarily women’s apparel (Nolita, Olio, and Sameunderneath do casual menswear as well), particularly from smaller independent lines.
Fun side note: haven’t looked at the Ace’s Portland website in a while and who should we see smiling on the front page but Emily Katz, fashion designer and Love Menu songstress. For quintessential Portland girls, the Ace could not have got it more right.
