There’s a reason we buy fashion magazines. It’s fun and inspiring to see the vision stylists and photographers create (combining labels, pairing unexpected pieces, accessorizing brilliantly) using the raw materials (and plenty of imagination) of the clothing we’ll see hanging on the rails in shops. Over at ultra, stylist Elianna Bar El and photographer Howard Petrella have worked together on an excellent editorial with loads of PDX personality (including the March Fourth Marching Band!) featuring clothes from shops including Frances May, Odessa, Anna Korte, Seaplane, Flutter, Pinkham Millinery, Phlox, Halo, and Red Light. Check out Shangri La.

We knew Project Runway was nosing around Portland, putting out feelers to some of our favorite designers. But did you know that Portland’s own Leanne Marshall (Leanimal) is joining Project Runway Season Five? We were tipped off by this piece in the Seattle PI (because to be honest, we haven’t been checking the Bravo site daily in anticipation of the announcement), but look! It’s totally official. And because we’re used to seeing photos of Leanne backstage calmly working on a garment at the last minute before her model walks out on the runway, 1.) she looks especially gorgeous here, and 2.) she’ll be PERFECT for the stressy, time-limited projects on Project. But oh, we’re worried about the drama. Leanne seems very un-drama. And what if some catty witch tries to take her out? Because look at the other Runwayers…yes, they were coached to look that way, but don’t better than half of them look like they want to eat your head off?
The sculptural aesthetic of Marshall’s line, Leanimal, makes her one of the more innovative designers in Portland, so it’s great to see her representing.
See for yourself. Find Leanimal at Foundation Garments (2712 NE Alberta) and Seaplane (827 NW 23rd).

Fill ‘er up.
In this corner, the lady on the hill, NW 23rd throws open the doors for its annual sidewalk sale. And in this corner, the Pearl, the shiny upstart invites shoppers to its Pearl Summer Style Sale. July 11-13 is shopping heaven. Everyone, that is, EVERYONE is cleaning out/up and getting ready for fall because retail is funny like that (we’re just getting used to summer here).
On NW 23rd, for the ladies, Souchi (807 NW 23rd), Seaplane (827 NW 23rd), Blush Beauty Bar (513 NW 23rd), Elizabeth Street (635 NW 23rd) and Zelda’s Shoe Bar(633 NW 23rd). Boys get Blake (2285 NW Johnson) and Sameunderneath (806 NW 23rd) and both of these also have goods for gals. These are just highlights. There are many, many shops between, not to mention the big fellas at the end of the row by Burnside, from Pottery Barn to Levis and Urban Outfitters.
And in the Pearl District, Moulé (1225 NW Everett) is a favorite (boys & girls), Nolita (923 NW 10th), Physical Element (1124 NW Lovejoy), and neighbor to the Pearl Bakery: Olivia Belle (110 NW 9th) . For gentlemen, try Finn (132 NW 12th Ave @ Davis). Plus there are all of the stationers like Ecru and Oblation, home goods shops. You could probably spend all three days there and still have more to look at. Oh, and shoes at Olive, Imelda’s, Shoefly, and Bella Moda. Whew!
Find a full list of Pearl District shopping here.

You want to get a sense of a store before you make the trek. You check the list of labels they carry. Check. (Local labels include Hecklewood, Antic, db clay and Betty Rides.) To know Lizard Lounge is to know two things. One: they want you to come, hang out, listen to music, (lounge, get it), maybe buy, maybe not. Two: this kind of casual is also tied up in the brands they carry (including house brand Horny Toad which now owns Nau). Recommend? Original Penguin and Ben Sherman for him. (2008 marks the 50 year anniversary of Hush Puppies! which thank god still make actual Hush Puppies in addition to a bewildering array of shoes that look like Topsiders, Van’s slip-ons, grandpa loafers, etceteras. But Hush Puppies!) Three Dots t’s and Tolani scarves for her. Freitag bags if you’re design-y. Chrome if you’re bike-y. They’re having a sale…up to 75% off this weekend, July 11-13.

Hello, sunshine. Olive Shoes summer sale runs through July 15 online and off (404 NW 10th) giving you 20-60% off shoes to wear on the road “less traveled by”* with shoes from Glory Chen (above), Eileen Shields, Tashkent by cheyenne, Georgina Goodman, and plenty more.

What are we looking forward to for this month’s edition of Crafty Wonderland?
Brian Reed’s Old School Stationery gives us new reasons to write you a letter. His hand-drawn designs (many of which evoke retro graphics calling to mind grandma’s apron, wallpaper, and china patterns…in a good way) are printed on a 1917 letterpress on Italian paper, and many are produced as wall hangings as well as cards.

Also, because we’re feeling the garden, we’re also into MOSS, and especially Diana’s embroidered pendants.
Crafty Wonderland is Portland’s once-a-month craft-y bazaar featuring lots of artisans with their often whimsical jewelry, clothing and other soft goods, and crafted items for the home (cool etched recycled glass, more little stuffed toys than you can shake a stick at, &c). As usual, it’s down in the air conditioned oasis of the Doug Fir Lounge (830 E. Burnside), this Sunday, July 13, from 11-4.
More Old School:

Cargo (380 NW 13th) hosts a trunk show for Modi Sondarotok’s line, IDOM, tonight, July 3, from 6-8 PM with 10% off all summer items.
Current and former Portlanders Amy Ruppel and Ginger Jones (who designs the line Truffles and once was a co-owner of Denwave) are among an international roster of featured artists for Converse’s Fall08 1HUND(RED) Artists footwear collection. 10% of the net wholesale price of these shoes goes to The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria based in Geneva, Switzerland.
Jones’ “Netted Together” Chuck Taylor All Star high top features a mesh overlay (which is probably the best detail we saw on any of the designs so far) and mosquito motif speaks to the story behind the project while Ruppel’s “Stitched Red Owl” (which isn’t on the Converse website yet but here’s a low-res peak at it) is classic whimsical Ruppel:
More PDX connections: We love the shoe by Megan Whitmarsh, a Los Angeles artist who was represented by Jenn Armbrust’s Motel gallery in Portland.
