Five Year Plan

Ebb and flow. We forget sometimes in our celebrations of new and shiny that good boutiques come and go. R.I.P. Denwave and Yes, for example.

So it is that the longevity and adaptability of Jo Carter’s Pearl District boutique Physical Element (1124 NW Lovejoy) bears remark. As the name suggests, Carter launched Physical Element five years ago as Portland’s first yoga and fitnesswear boutique. Over time, the stylish and savvy Carter added fashion to the mix with forward-thinking European and Japanese lines (the statement-making Cop.Copine and Moyuru knitwear from Japan top the list), several that you’ll find nowhere else in Portland. And for her five-year anniversary, Carter completely reinvents the Element as a fashion boutique, adding more killer lines like Casch Copenhagen and IKKS from Paris. If you haven’t been in, now’s the time.

Celebrate the launch of the new Physical Element this evening, Friday, April 25 from 7-9 PM with a fashion showcase at 7:30 PM with the latest from international labels Cop.Copine, Moyuru, and Deca as well as collections by local designers Renee Armstrong, Wendi Martin, Magali Corzo and Elizabeth Rohloff. You’ll get a sneak peek at the Fall 2008 collections from Casch Copenhagen, IKKS France and Lilian. And to top it off, get 10% off all purchases at the event.

New Line: May Tee

May Tee Trunk Show at Mario’s

One absolutely cannot go wrong looking to Isamu Noguchi for inspiration as far as we’re concerned. So it is that we look forward in anticipation to the inaugural collection of Portland fashion designer May Tee. She’s calling her Fall 08 collection (inspired by Noguchi), Soft Sculptures, a minimalist exploration of volume and line through the well-placed pleat, dart, seam.

The Malaysian-born, Parsons-educated designer (who’s done time in the high tech wilds) presents her Fall 08 collection at a trunk show at Mario’s (833 SW Broadway) this Saturday, April 19 from 10-5.

Pinkham Millinery Sale

hat: Dayna Pinkham

A sensational hat, modern, snappy, but made in a traditional millinery studio comes at a price. And for some, it’s steep, which is why a sale at Dayna Pinkham’s Pinkham Millinery (515 SW Broadway) this weekend from 12-4 each day, with discounts of 25-75% off regular prices is a welcome thing indeed. Find an array of warm Fall felt caps, lightweight Spring straws, samples, and discontinued styles.

Flourish Fashion Show: Thursday Night

Flourish Fashion Show: Thursday Night

Thursday night’s fashion show at Mississippi Ballroom at 7 PM features looks from N Mississippi boutiques Blue, Gypsy Chic, Black Wagon, Pin Me Apparel, Phlox, and labels Sameunderneath, and Isaac Hers. Looking into our fashion crystal ball (and based on past experience) we expect a little something for everyone at this show (including men — casual cool from Sameunderneath): sophisticated and feminine looks, 70s and 80s should represent, a dose of on-trend contemporary looks, and hip kidswear (and we mean children not “club kids”).

Out East

Stormy weather has never looked so beautiful. Portland designers Suzi Johnson of Souchi and Tatiana Sakurai of Hubris & Sophrosyne are among those featured in the latest fashion editorial on ultra: OUT EAST. Magnificent and hyperreal, it was shot in the badlands east of Mt. Hood by photographer Kevin Focht and styled by Elianna Bar El with looks from Portland boutiques Bubble Boutique, Moule, Olio United, and Souchi.

This is Getting Interesting

Well, the West End is coming right along isn’t it? We can credit Randy Gragg (editor of Portland Spaces and former architecture/urban planning critic for the Oregonian) with the tag “West End,” and we can credit forces like the Ace Hotel, the Living Room Theater, and American Apparel for bringing shoppers to the blocks just south of W Burnside from say, 10th up to 13th. Odessa (410 SW 13th) and got there first, then The English Dept (1124 SW Alder) took the leap from NW 23rd. Both Covet (429 SW 10th) and Frances May (1013 SW Washington) opened this past weekend.

What’s interesting is the concentration of higher-end, independent labels that are found in few if any other boutiques in Portland and the kind of modern girl aesthetic that runs through these shops. Odessa has long had Mayle, and has VPL, Eventide, AF Vandervorst, Daryl K and Opening Ceremony shoes. Frances May will have Mooka Kinney, Rachel Comey, Samantha Pleet, Christian Joy, Clu, and Lorick. And The English Dept has Eley Kishimoto, Development, Built by Wendy, and Kloset Red Carpet. And the local designers represented, Elizabeth Dye at The English Dept (it’s her shop) and Church & State at the new Frances May, are among our best. Throw in Canoe for good measure, and the modern girl doesn’t have to stray far for the goods.

The Pearl may be in transition, with sometimes it seems more chains than independents, but just across Burnside, things are looking very good indeed.
