There are two reasons why this, by Seattle jewelry designer Kimberly Baker, is a very timely piece. Reason #1: some of us are in the Golden State at the moment, where the state bird is in fact the quail (don’t dare say “squab,” implying he’s only a dinner to you). Reason #2: you will never find a crew more adamantly in support of carpe-ing one’s diem than that of ultra. In fact, we’ll take your bird in the hand and raise you two.
So don’t miss Thursday’s (August 2) trunk show at Le Train Bleu (748 NW 11th) for Kimberly Baker. You owe yourself a piece of Baker’s work, at the intersection of rough-n-ready and the natural world. That’s 6-9 PM, at Le Train Bleu.
And by the way, if you love us, you’ll send along Baker’s Honeycomb Ring as a token of your affection.

Every Thursday through August, Portland-based jewelry designer Blake Van Roekel is placing a glass charm near the obelisk at the T of SW Park Place in Washington Park. Van Roekel recently broke her own favorite magma ring on a wild ride on a Washington Park teeter totter with her sister. She loved the bright orange glass ring so much she couldn’t toss it, so she left the broken chunk as a charm for someone else to find on a brick wall nearby thus inspiring her current project.
Meanwhile, if you’d rather procure your magma jewels the traditional way, you can find them online.

The Eastside’s chic lingerie spot, Lille Boutique (1007 E Burnside), holds the distinction among lingerie shops in Portland of never veering toward the vulgar. The Sara(h)s’ take on intimate apparel is an oasis of modern, civilized lingerie, delivered with a wink that is not saucy but says “I know you know, too.” Find Dessous and Araks, Princesse Tam Tam, Ciel, The Lake and Stars, and many more boutique labels in natural fabrics like bamboo jersey, silk, and organic cotton. Beginning tomorrow, Friday, July 27, you’ll find 10-20% off nearly everything in the shop.

Jo Carter’s Physical Element (1124 NW Lovejoy) in the Pearl District is a hybrid carrying both streetwear and fitnesswear. Pardon us for jumping on the hype wagon, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mark Day Zero of the Era of IKEA in Portland, Oregon. That’s 280,000 square feet of Swedish design executed inexpensively just for you and the rest of the masses at Cascade Station off 205 out by the airport. Yeah!

ultra loves Liza Rietz. This fearless Portland-based designer and musician has a gift for making perfectly feminine and wearable pieces that have a distinctive and artful twist, her pleated ruffles a flourish, or mark of the artist’s hand on an otherwise sleek dress, for example. Her crisp notions of embellishment without sacrificing line are fierce and unique.
Rietz is set to open a studio/store at 2305 NW Savier with John Blasioli (who designs the men’s line, a broken spoke), that will feature both ready-to-wear and the possibility of custom pieces from both designers. The grand opening is slated for August. Your view to this best of all possible futures is Rietz’ trunk show this Friday, July 27 through Sunday, July 29 from 11-7 PM which serves as a mini-kickoff. All Liza Rietz will be 25% off for these three days, and her designs will continue to be available this weekend through to the official opening of the shop. Find summer linen jumpers, fitted cotton A-line dresses, vests, tunics and babydoll dresses in soft bamboo, as well as one-of-a-kind pieces.

Don’t miss.

Well, we do live in the Promised Land for sneakers with not one, but two giants making their homes here in the Portland Metro area. So it makes sense that we’d have our share of specialty boutiques that zero in on sneakers with Lifted (2415 NE Broadway) and Just Be Complex (107 NW 5th Ave) doing the heavy hitting for the hard-to-find and the hot new shoe.
NE Broadway’s Lifted is geared to the collector with more mainline and obscure sneaker labels than you’ll find anywhere else in Portland including among many others Nike, adidas, Jordan, Undrcrwn, Alife, and etnies plus. We love Just Be Complex (107 NW 5th Ave) because sneakers are only a fraction of what you’ll find there. Besides Adidas, Nike and Vault/Vans plus related apparel (t-shirts, hoodies, sunglasses), Just Be is renowned for its toys (vinyl!) and monthly art shows with ties to US skate culture and Japanese artists. We can’t get out of there without a Japanese fashion mag.
Baddoll + Oddball2 (1639 NW Marshall) has Converse, Puma, adidas and more for men and women. See also Caviar (2728 NE MLK Blvd at Knott) a core shop where you’re as likely to find skull printed bandanas as Adidas, Nike/Nike White Label, LRG, and Vans.
And to go straight to the source, don’t forget the adidas Originals store (1039 NW Couch) and Puma store (40 NW 10th) within a stone’s throw of one another in the Pearl as well as the Niketown store downtown (SW 6th and Salmon) and the adidas Store (5020 NE MLK Jr. Blvd).

Everything in the shop is 20% off at Flutter, North Mississippi’s wunderkammer of the patinaed object, the French, the jeweled, and the birdies. A candlestick, a fragrance, a set of antlers, a cafe chair. For those who need more personality than modernity, Flutter delivers.
