Many will go to Sellwood primarily for the antiques, and there is an incredible concentration of multi-vendor antique and collectible emporia in Sellwood, but that’s not you because you will have, in your pocket, this little list of of shops with good things for you and yours. The shops are centered on two streets: SE Milwaukie and SE 13th.
Even though SE Milwaukie is good with a couple of STARS antique malls, cafes, and so on, we’d start on SE 13th at Tilde (7919 SE 13th). Why? Because jewelry designer Debbe Hamada and partner Doreen McFadden have put together one of the best shops in Portland for home, gift, and accessory with a good representation of Portland designers. At the colorful Tilde (pronounced “til day”) you’ll find Orla Kiely’s graphically Scandinavian-esque bags, Dottyspeck silver jewelry, Etui Stationary, Matt & Nat handbags, Kier cashmere, Wingard vases. Between the hothouse bright walls of Fuchia (6658 SE Milwaukie) you’ll find beautiful jewelry, accessories, and objects for your home (good ceramics). Go in to buy a gift and end up doing a one-for-you, one-for-me.
Era (7901 SE 13th) is one of a handful of shops in Portland with a consistently interesting selection of mid-century modern furniture.
For all of its vintage, antique and collectible, Sellwood has few women’s boutiques. CoCo Gets Dressed (7007 SE Milwaukie) is a little shop with casual chic clothing, accessories, and jewelry by the likes of Lilly Pulitzer, Cynthia Ashby, XCVI, Putumayo, and Susan Goodwin.
CCGD’s sister shop, Coco & Toulouse Go Shopping (7080 SE 16th) is a French-themed femme gift boutique with candles from Votivo and Tocca, bath products by Zents, Hobo International handbags, Rae Dunn ceramics. The stock refreshes regularly and keep an eye out for the annual French Flea Market Sale in July with goods the owner, Jo Ellen Newton, hauls back from France each year.
