Among the most coveted items at Relish (433 NW 10th) are these vessels by California ceramic artist Sara Paloma. These serene groupings of wheelthrown vases are both lyrical in their curving shapes and ironic in the way that the voluminous vase that will likely never hold a stem narrows to its tiny, restrictive opening. The work references some of the more streamlined pieces designed by Swedish art ceramicist Carl-Harry Stalhane in its simplified, elegant forms, but the massing of forms makes them something else altogether: crowd or city or cloud, tooth, or stone. Love.

One more reason to get up to Alberta to Mabel & Zora (1468 NE Alberta): a Spring Party on April 20, from 6-9 PM at which all dresses are 15% off, the champagne flows, and they’ll have a drawing for a briefcase and portfolio from Catherine Manuell Designs. This is the Aussie luggage designer who’s doing eye-popping colors (and cool textures…no more black fabric bags!) that will make you look 40% more fantastic (please pronounce “fantastic” with your best Audrey Hepburn accent just this once) on your march through the airport. Mabel & Zora has goods from French Connection, Hazel, Sweet Pea, and locally, jewelry by Amy Olson and Kiersten Crowley. Plus they now have in lots of great new lines including Mixie, Veronica M, and Hype. Bonus info: April 20 is the birthday of the charming owner Tiffanee Bean. Celebrate with her at the sunniest shop on NE Alberta.

Dear Spring,
We know you’re out there. We got your message via the dogwoods. And we’re trying to be patient, but sometimes it’s hard. Looking at dresses at Una (2802 SE Ankeny) is helping to pass the time. (Coven is especially good.) When you really and truly get here for good, we’re going to be ready for you.

New vintage (oxymoronically) to keep Hattie’s and the backroom weekend shop at Burnside Proper company, rock n’ rose is open for business at 616 E Burnside. A big airy space with “vintage casual, used designer, and select new lines,” it looks like reliably now-looking late vintage.Â

New arrivals in from Los Angeles at The Bargain Bee (2330 NW Westover) include day dresses and smock tops, printed tees and tanks, cropped hoodies.
You’ll recall this is also an outlet store of sorts for both Sole (from which you’ll see new discounted goods arriving on the 1st and 15th of every month) and The Bee and Thistle, from which new markdowns come every Monday.
Through the end of the month, all clearance merchandise is an additional 30% off!

For spring, Moxie (2400 E Burnside) has new dresses from Max & Cleo by BCBG, House of Spy, and a new line: Vintage Creations plus shipments of jeans from wide leg to skinny. They’re welcoming a new jewelry designer, Pistachio by Marisa Danielle, who mixes vintage jewelry and fabrics. But we’re really excited about these royal blue shoes! Royal’s not the new black (nor is cobalt), but bouncing this blue off black and charcoal now and white or heathered grey in a month or so sounds really good to us.

That Portland and Brooklyn share certain aesthetic tendancies is not news. But it is news that you can now find pieces of Brooklyn-based Anna Sheffield’s Bing Bang jewelry collection at Local35 (3556 SE Hawthorne). Many metals (incl. copper, yes!), a slightly tarnished shine if at all, messy chains, there’s a toughness to Sheffield’s pretty that appeals.
